Homemade sorrel is a favourite drink here in Barbados, especially during the Christmas season, but it

can be enjoyed year-round. The rich, tangy flavour of sorrel, combined with flavourful spices, creates a unique beverage that’s hard to resist. Packed with vitamin C and known for its digestive benefits, sorrel is more than just delicious; it's good for you too! Made from the vibrant roselle flowers, which are a cousin to hibiscus, this refreshing drink is a staple in many homes across the Caribbean.

Homemade Sorrel Drink

(makes approximately 2 litres)


Ingredients:

2 cups dried sorrel flowers (or 3 cups fresh, deseeded sorrel flowers)

7 cups boiling water

2 bayleaves

Rind of one orange

2 cinnamon sticks

10 whole cloves

3 tablespoons grated ginger

1 teaspoon grated nutmeg

¾ - 1 cup sugar (this can be adjusted to taste)


Method:

  1. Put sorrel, bay leaves, orange rind, cinnamon sticks, cloves, ginger and nutmeg in heat-proof container.

  2. Add boiling water until it is fully covered by water and leave the container covered overnight.

  3. Strain off liquid and add sugar to taste. Chill and serve.
