As someone who’s done a few solo trips in the past (and I definitely have some lined up in the future!), I know how important it is to get that perfect photo of yourself in the different locations… and how hard that can be if you’re on your own. Sometimes, capturing those memories can be a real challenge without a travel buddy.
Not to worry, there are some ways that you can still ensure that you get the perfect selfie on your trip… and you can even use some of these methods in this post to make the photos look like they were taken by someone else! Read on for more tips on how I do this. All of these methods can be used on your smartphone.
Plan Out The Shots You Want
One of the keys to capturing amazing photos is a little preparation - not just for solo travel, but for any time you're planning on taking a lot of photos! Spending some time planning your shots can make a big difference. Research your destinations, and consider aspects such as the time of day you'll be visiting, if the location will be crowded or not, and if photography is allowed in that area.
One of my personal favourite ways to get inspo for photos is by using social media platforms such as Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok. You can check out photos tagged by other users at your chosen spots and see what's possible, and then save these to collections or board to look at again later. This is also a great way to get ideas for outfits!
Remember, it's all about creating a vision for your photos and then bringing it to life.
2. Use Burst Mode on your Smartphone to Get More Variety
To increase your chances of capturing that perfect shot, use your phone's burst mode. This feature takes multiple photos in quick succession, giving you LOTS of options to choose from. Whether you're using a tripod with a Bluetooth remote, a timer, or asking someone else nearby to snap a photo for you, burst mode ensures you won't miss a moment.
For even better results, experiment with subtle pose variations in each shot. By slightly adjusting your head angle, crossing and uncrossing your legs, or changing your hand position, you'll create a wide range of photos to choose from. Of course, remember to delete the unwanted images afterward to free up storage space!

3. Consider a Tripod or Selfie Stick...
While selfie sticks often look a bit obnoxious when being used, they're indeed very handy for snapping photos of yourself. If you're still not a fan, consider a lightweight mobile tripod with adjustable legs that can be easily placed and even wrapped around objects for creative angles.
For the best of both worlds, a selfie stick tripod combo is a fantastic option. I recently purchased this one that has adjustable height and includes a mini Bluetooth remote control, which is perfect for precise shot timing. It's compact, folds right down so that I can put it in my handbag, and has become one of my fave travel essentials.
Remember, these moments are fleeting, so make the most of your photo opportunities.
4. ...Or Prop Your Phone Up on Something Close By!
If packing extra gear isn't your style, don't worry! You can still capture amazing photos with everyday items. With a little ingenuity, you can achieve impressive results using what you have on hand.
Use nearby tree branches, walls, steps, or even your own water bottle as makeshift tripods to prop your phone on. Just ensure your phone is securely placed to prevent accidents, and always be aware of your surroundings and prioritise your phone's safety.

5. Ask Someone for Help
Sometimes, the best photos are captured with a little help from fellow travellers. f you're in a popular tourist spot and see others capturing stunning shots, don't hesitate to ask a friendly-looking stranger for help. Many people are happy to help, especially if you offer to return the favour. Just remember to trust your instincts and only hand over your phone to someone you feel comfortable with.
Most importantly, have fun with it! Experiment with your photos and poses, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. With a little practice and creativity, you'll be capturing stunning photos of yourself on your trips in no time.
Remember, the perfect shot is often just around the corner, so keep exploring and snapping away!
