It's the most wonderful time of the year... and I'm not talking about Christmas!

Kadooment Day, which falls on the first Monday in August each year, is the colourful finale to the summer Crop Over season here in Barbados. It's a day of music, dance, food, drink, and of course, dazzling costumes!

Kadooment Day is considered by many as a must-do experience here in Bim, and is enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike. If you're joining the fun this year (or planning ahead!), there's one crucial detail to consider: packing light for a carefree Kadooment experience. You'll be dancing in the sun for hours, so ditch the bulky bags and keep your essentials close at hand. Definitely consider a hands-free solution like a fanny pack or thigh bag. As you prepare to hit the road, remember – comfort is always key!

These are just suggestions of course, however I'm a firm believer in the phrase "better to be safe than sorry!" Here's a quick guide to some essentials to consider bringing with you for a carefree Kadooment experience.

Kadooment Day Essentials Packing List:

  • Phone: For obvious reasons, of course! Snap the unforgettable moments and stay connected, but remember to walk with your phone fully charged!

  • Sunblock: The Bajan sun is no joke! Pack a high SPF, water-resistant sunblock to reapply throughout the day and keep your skin protected. Can't find a travel-size version? Reuse a smaller bottle or container (like hotel shampoo bottles) and fill it with your sunscreen.

  • Cash: While some vendors may have card machines, it's always a smart move to have cash on hand for food, drinks, or any incidentals. Also consider putting your cash into the back of your phone case for extra security.

  • Portable Handheld Fan: These days are HOT - it feels like ya melting! I bought this handheld HonHey fan a few years ago and it's quickly become my fave item to carry in the fete!

  • ID card: Always carry some form of ID with you when out and about!

  • Lip balm: Ain't nobody got time for chapped lips! Keep your lips hydrated and protected from the sun with lip balm.

  • Mini deodorant: Stay fresh throughout the day with a travel-sized deodorant.

  • Safety pins: These little lifesavers can come in SO handy for wardrobe malfunctions or quick costume adjustments. Clip a few of them together and then pin them into the lining of your bag so that you don't risk losing them!

  • Hair Ties: Keep your hair out of your face with a couple of hair ties or scrunchies. It'll also help keep you cool!

  • House Key: Don't get locked out after the festivities! Keep a spare house key tucked away in your bag.

And boom, you're all set to dive in fully in the vibrant energy of Kadooment Day. Have a safe and happy jump!
